Toshiba is a Japanese manufacturer with a long history in air conditioning — they were among the first companies to develop inverter technology for domestic air conditioning in the 1980s. Their UK residential and commercial range is less prominently marketed than Mitsubishi Electric and Daikin but offers genuine quality in specific applications. Here is our honest assessment.
Toshiba’s UK Range
Toshiba’s UK residential range includes the Seiya (entry-level), the Shorai Edge (mid-range with enhanced features) and the Haori (premium). The Haori series, with its distinctive design and high efficiency figures, is Toshiba’s answer to the Daikin Emura in the premium design-led segment. The ESTIA air source heat pump is Toshiba’s boiler replacement product. Commercial VRF systems are available under the Super Digital Inverter product family.
Strengths
Shorai Edge efficiency: The Shorai Edge carries strong SCOP heating efficiency figures and performs well in real-world UK conditions. Competitive with Daikin Perfera at similar price points.
Haori aesthetics: The Haori series has a fabric-textured front panel that is genuinely distinctive — it looks less like an air conditioning unit and more like a design feature. Available in multiple textures and colours. For design-conscious interiors, it is a credible alternative to the Daikin Emura.
Quiet operation: Toshiba’s mid and premium range units are quiet — Shorai Edge runs at approximately 19-22dB(A) at minimum, competitive with the best units from Mitsubishi and Daikin.
Price: Toshiba units are typically priced 5-15% below comparable Mitsubishi and Daikin units — a modest saving that may be significant for multi-room installations.
Weaknesses
Parts availability and service network: Toshiba’s UK air conditioning parts and service network is less developed than Mitsubishi Electric or Daikin. For older units (over 8-10 years), sourcing parts can be slower. This is our primary reservation about specifying Toshiba for commercial installations where uptime is critical.
Installer availability: Fewer UK installers carry Toshiba-specific product training compared to Mitsubishi and Daikin. This does not affect installation quality but can affect availability of warranty support.
Our Recommendation
Toshiba Shorai Edge or Haori are credible choices for domestic residential installations where parts availability is less critical — particularly where the design aesthetics of the Haori appeal. We do not specify Toshiba for commercial installations where rapid parts availability and an extensive service network are important.
