Kitchen-Specific Considerations
Grease and airborne particles: Kitchen air is laden with grease vapour and cooking particles that accumulate on air conditioning filters and coils faster than in any other domestic environment. We recommend units with washable anti-grease filters and easy-clean front panels for kitchen installations, and advise filter cleaning every 2-3 weeks during periods of regular use rather than the standard 4-6 weeks.
Humidity from cooking: Boiling, steaming and dishwashers produce significant humidity. An air conditioning unit in cooling mode will dehumidify the kitchen air as a secondary effect — reducing condensation on windows and surfaces.
Unit positioning: Kitchen units should be positioned away from the direct line of cooking vapours — above eye level on a wall away from the hob is preferable. Avoid positioning directly above the hob where grease splatter could reach the unit.
Noise: Kitchen environments are less noise-sensitive than bedrooms — standard units are acceptable and premium quiet units are not usually necessary, allowing a more cost-effective specification.
Open Plan Kitchen-Living Rooms
Modern open-plan kitchen-living spaces are among the most common air conditioning applications we encounter. A typical 35-45 sq metre open-plan kitchen-dining-living space requires a 5-7kW unit — larger than a standard bedroom or living room installation. We always calculate the heat load properly for open-plan spaces rather than using simplified room size rules.
