Samsung Air Conditioning Error Codes — Complete Guide

Samsung air conditioning systems use a numerical error code system displayed on the indoor unit LED panel. Here is a guide to the most common Samsung error codes we encounter on service and repair calls across Surrey, Sussex and South London.

How Samsung Displays Error Codes

Samsung indoor units display error codes directly on the LED temperature display — typically a two-digit number preceded by “E” or displayed as a flashing number sequence. On units with a Samsung SmartThings connection, fault notifications can also be sent to the SmartThings app on your phone, which can be useful for identifying faults before calling an engineer.

Common Samsung Error Codes

E1 / E101: Indoor unit communication fault. The indoor unit cannot establish communication with the outdoor unit. Check inter-unit cable connections. If connections are secure, PCB fault likely. Requires engineer investigation.

E2 / E201: Zero-crossing detection failure. Electrical supply issue — the system is not detecting the AC power cycle correctly. May indicate a problem with the incoming electrical supply or the system’s power supply board. Check fuse and circuit breaker for the air conditioning circuit.

E3 / E301: Indoor unit fan motor fault. The indoor fan motor is not operating within specification. Check that the air filter is not heavily blocked (which can overload the motor). If filter is clean, motor replacement may be required.

E4 / E401: Indoor unit drain pump fault (where a drain pump is fitted). The condensate pump is not operating. Check pump power supply and float switch. Pump replacement may be required.

E5 / E501: Outdoor unit overcurrent protection. The outdoor unit is drawing excessive current — typically caused by compressor or motor problems. Switch off immediately and call an engineer.

E6 / E601: Communication fault between indoor and outdoor units. Similar to E1 but specifically identified as a cable or PCB communication fault rather than a power issue. Check inter-unit wiring. If secure, engineer investigation required.

E7 / E701: Indoor coil temperature sensor fault. The thermistor measuring evaporator temperature has failed or its connection is loose. Low-cost repair — sensor replacement.

E9 / E901: Outdoor unit discharge temperature too high. Compressor discharge temperature has exceeded safe operating limit. Causes: high ambient temperature, low refrigerant, compressor fault. Switch off and call an engineer.

E101: Outdoor unit high pressure fault. High side refrigerant pressure has exceeded safe limits. Do not restart. Check for blocked condenser (clear debris from outdoor unit). If condenser is clear, engineer investigation required.

E102: Outdoor unit low pressure fault. Low refrigerant charge — likely a leak. System will not cool effectively. Switch off and call an engineer for leak detection and repair.

E121: Outdoor unit temperature sensor fault. Outdoor ambient thermistor has failed. Sensor replacement required.

E154: Indoor unit temperature sensor fault (pipe). The thermistor monitoring refrigerant pipe temperature has failed. Sensor replacement required.

E162: Outdoor unit fan motor fault. Outdoor fan motor not operating within specification. May indicate motor failure or debris obstruction. Check for debris around outdoor unit. If clear, engineer investigation required.

E165: Compressor fault. A general compressor fault code indicating the compressor is not operating correctly. Do not restart. Engineer attendance required — this is a significant fault that can indicate compressor failure.

WindFree Specific Codes

Samsung WindFree models have some additional codes related to the micro-hole distribution system:

E251: WindFree panel position sensor fault. The motorised WindFree panel is not operating correctly. May resolve with a system power cycle. If persistent, sensor or motor replacement required.

Getting Samsung Repairs Done

Samsung has improved UK parts availability significantly in recent years. Common sensors, PCBs and fan motors are generally available within 24-48 hours. For less common parts, 3-5 working days is typical. Call 07833 053749 or contact us online.
