Finding a reliable air conditioning engineer is not as simple as searching online and picking the first result. The air conditioning installation market in the UK has a significant tail of unqualified operators — some of whom cause expensive problems that properly qualified engineers are then called in to fix. Here is how to find someone reliable.
Non-Negotiable Qualifications
F-Gas certification: Every engineer who handles refrigerant must hold a current F-Gas certificate issued by an approved certification body (City & Guilds, REFCOM or equivalent). This is a legal requirement, not a nice-to-have. Ask for the certificate number and check it is current. Any engineer who cannot or will not provide F-Gas certification should not be handling your refrigerant — doing so is illegal and voids equipment warranties.
NICEIC or equivalent registration: The electrical work associated with an air conditioning installation — the dedicated circuit and isolation switch — requires an electrician registered with a competent person scheme. Ask whether the installer is NICEIC registered or uses a registered electrician for the electrical work. If neither, the electrical work may not be certified under Part P Building Regulations.
Accreditations That Add Confidence
Checkatrade or Trustpilot: Independently verified customer reviews. Look for sustained positive ratings over a significant volume of reviews — not just a handful. Check that reviews are for air conditioning specifically, not unrelated trades.
Manufacturer training: Engineers trained specifically by Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin or other major brands have demonstrated product-specific competence. Manufacturer-trained engineers are worth seeking for complex commercial installations or warranty-relevant work.
Red Flags
- No site survey before quoting — impossible to quote accurately without seeing the property
- Cannot provide F-Gas certificate number when asked
- Very low quote with vague inclusions — hidden extras are common in low-ball quotes
- Payment demanded in full before installation
- No company registration number, insurance or accreditation details available
- No written quote provided — verbal quotes only
Questions to Ask
Ask any prospective installer:
- What is your F-Gas certificate number and when does it expire?
- Are you NICEIC registered for the electrical work?
- What specific unit model are you quoting (brand and model number)?
- What is included in the price — specifically electrical work, pipework length and F-Gas documentation?
- What guarantee do you provide on your workmanship?
