Air conditioning installation costs in the UK in 2026 range from around £1,200 for a single-room wall-mounted system to £15,000 or more for a whole-house multi-split installation. But those headline figures hide enormous variation — and understanding what drives the cost is the difference between a fair quote and an expensive mistake.
We install air conditioning across Surrey, Sussex and South London every week. Here is an honest breakdown of what you can expect to pay, based on real jobs we have completed.
Air Conditioning Installation Costs by System Type
Single Room Split System — £1,200 to £2,200
A wall-mounted split system consists of one indoor unit and one outdoor unit connected by refrigerant pipework. This is by far the most common domestic installation. A standard installation — say a Mitsubishi Electric MSZ-AP25 in a bedroom with a straightforward pipework run — typically costs £1,200 to £1,600 fully installed including all materials, labour and F-Gas documentation.
Cost goes up when pipework runs are longer (over 5 metres), when the outdoor unit needs to go on a high wall bracket or flat roof, or when wall construction makes core drilling difficult (solid brick walls take longer than cavity walls). A premium brand like Daikin Perfera or Mitsubishi Electric MSZ-LN in the same room might cost £1,600 to £2,200 due to the higher unit price.
Two-Room Multi-Split System — £2,800 to £4,500
A multi-split system connects two indoor units to a single outdoor unit. This is the most popular choice for homeowners wanting to cool both a bedroom and a living room or home office. The outdoor unit is larger and more expensive than a single-split unit, but you save on installation time and only have one unit on the external wall.
A typical two-room Mitsubishi Electric multi-split system for a 3-bedroom semi-detached house — master bedroom and living room — runs £2,800 to £3,600 installed. Daikin equivalents are similar. Samsung and LG two-room systems often come in at the lower end of this range.
Three to Five Room Multi-Split — £4,500 to £8,500
Multi-split systems can serve up to five indoor units from a single outdoor unit. This makes them ideal for whole-house air conditioning. A five-room installation in a large detached house — four bedrooms and a living room — typically costs £6,000 to £8,500 installed. The outdoor unit for a five-room system is substantial and needs adequate external space and good airflow.
Commercial VRF/VRV Systems — £8,000 to £50,000+
VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow) systems are designed for commercial buildings where many rooms need individual climate control from a centralised system. A small office of 10-15 people might use a VRF system serving 8 cassette units, costing £12,000 to £20,000 installed. Large commercial premises cost significantly more.
What Affects the Price?
Brand Choice
This is the single biggest variable after system size. Mitsubishi Electric and Daikin are consistently the most expensive brands — their units typically cost 20-40% more than equivalent Samsung or LG units. In our experience the premium is justified for installations that will run 24/7 (server rooms, commercial premises) or where noise is critical (bedrooms). For a home office or living room, Samsung and LG deliver excellent performance at lower cost.
Property Type and Wall Construction
Solid brick walls — common in Victorian and Edwardian properties — require core drilling that takes longer and costs more than cavity wall installations. Listed buildings may require planning consent for external equipment, adding time and cost. High-rise installations (apartments above the 3rd floor) require specialist access equipment or internal pipework routing.
Pipework Run Length
Most systems are quoted with up to 5 metres of refrigerant pipework included. Every additional metre adds roughly £30-50 depending on pipe diameter. A long run from the indoor unit to an outdoor unit on the far side of the building can add £300-600 to the quoted price.
Electrical Work
Air conditioning systems require a dedicated electrical circuit with isolation switch. If your consumer unit has spare capacity and the installation point is close, electrical work adds £150-300. If a new circuit needs to be run from a remote consumer unit, or if the consumer unit needs upgrading, electrical costs can reach £500-800.
Real Examples from Our Recent Installations
3-bedroom semi-detached, Crawley RH10: Mitsubishi Electric 2.5kW single unit in master bedroom. Cavity wall, 4-metre pipework run, outdoor unit on rear wall bracket. Total: £1,380 including F-Gas certification.
4-bedroom detached, Horsham RH12: Daikin multi-split system — three bedrooms and a home office. Outdoor unit on side return. One solid brick wall requiring core drilling. Total: £5,200 including all four indoor units, outdoor unit, electrical isolation and F-Gas documentation.
Ground floor office, Guildford GU1: Samsung 5kW unit in open-plan office of approximately 40 sq metres. Simple installation with outdoor unit on car park wall. Total: £1,680.
Victorian terraced house, Brighton BN1: LG multi-split, two bedrooms. Solid wall throughout — two core drills required. All pipework run internally through roof void to avoid visible external trunking. Total: £3,400.
What’s Included in a Good Quote?
A properly itemised air conditioning quote should include:
- The specific unit model — not just “5kW wall-mounted unit”
- All refrigerant pipework and electrical cable included up to a stated run length
- Commissioning and F-Gas leak test
- F-Gas documentation (legally required)
- Operational training
- Warranty registration
Watch out for quotes that exclude F-Gas documentation, exclude electrical work (“to be quoted separately”) or specify cheap no-name brands that look similar to Mitsubishi and Daikin units but carry no manufacturer support.
What Not to Pay For
You should not pay a call-out fee for a quote. Any reputable installer offers free site surveys. If someone is charging £50-100 just to come and measure up, that is not standard practice.
You should not pay extra for F-Gas certification and documentation — this is a legal requirement for the installer and should be included as standard. An installer who charges extra for it, or who suggests it is optional, is cutting corners that could invalidate your warranty and expose you to legal liability.
Annual Running Costs
A 2.5kW air conditioning unit in cooling mode typically costs 15-25p per hour to run depending on the energy tariff and how hard it is working. Running a single bedroom unit for 8 hours overnight during a heatwave costs approximately £1.20-2.00. A whole-house system running on multiple zones costs proportionally more but modern inverter systems modulate their output and are significantly more efficient than older on/off systems.
In heating mode (heat pump function), air conditioning is typically 3-4 times more efficient than electric heating — a 2.5kW unit delivering 2.5kW of heating typically consumes only 600-800W of electricity.
